Body

As you know, insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. Its impact extends across the insurance system — increasing costs for consumers and businesses, fueling more sophisticated criminal activity, and creating new challenges for insurers, regulators, and law enforcement.

Addressing those challenges requires a coordinated approach. With that in mind, the Ohio Insurance Institute (OII) is bringing together leaders from across the insurance, investigative, policy, regulatory, and law enforcement communities for the 2026 Ohio Insurance Fraud Summit, taking place Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at The Fawcett Center at The Ohio State University.

The summit is designed to elevate understanding of insurance fraud as a significant cost driver and strengthen alignment around strategies to mitigate its impact. In addition to the government affairs and legal professionals who regularly participate in OII meetings, we encourage members to extend this invitation to colleagues working in claims, Special Investigative Units, fraud detection and prevention, underwriting, compliance, and other areas with a role in combating insurance fraud.

The event will provide an opportunity to better understand the evolving fraud landscape, share expertise across disciplines, and identify opportunities for coordinated action.

We are especially pleased to welcome Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson, who will deliver the summit’s keynote address during lunch.

What We’ll Explore

The program will feature national and Ohio-focused perspectives on the issues shaping insurance fraud today and the strategies needed to address them, including:

  • The State of Insurance Fraud — A look at emerging risks, fraud trends, cost drivers, consumer impacts, and the importance of coordinated prevention, detection, and enforcement efforts.
  • Artificial Intelligence and the New Fraud Frontier — How AI is creating new fraud risks while also giving insurers more sophisticated tools to detect suspicious activity and strengthen investigations.
  • Fraud Case Study & Reporting Best Practices — A practical examination of an Ohio insurance fraud investigation, including effective referrals, reporting practices, and collaboration between insurers and investigators.
  • Protecting the Safety Net — Lessons from fraud affecting the Ohio Assigned Risk Plan and how industry, regulatory, operational, and legislative responses helped strengthen oversight and protect the integrity of the Plan.
  • Policy, Advocacy, and Cross-Functional Strategies — A discussion of legislative and regulatory developments, emerging policy priorities, and ways operational fraud expertise can better inform advocacy and policymaking.

Throughout the day, national leaders from the insurance, investigative, policy, regulatory, and law enforcement communities will share insights and highlight opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

Insurance fraud affects more than an individual claim or carrier. Its costs ultimately reach Ohio consumers and businesses. We hope you and your colleagues will join us for this important conversation about how our industry can work together to stay ahead of evolving threats and strengthen Ohio’s approach to fraud prevention and mitigation.
