Prescription scam brings prison term for Burlington Township doctor
NEWARK - A Burlington Township doctor has received a 33-month prison term for taking part in a prescription drug scam, authorities say.
Bernard Ogon, 48, also was ordered to forfeit $75,000 and to make restitution of $24 million, said the U.S. Attorney's Office for New Jersey.
It said Ogon received $20 to $30 for each prescription he signed as part of a scheme that defrauded health care benefit programs.
Ogon provided hundreds of medically unnecessary prescriptions from January 2013 to February 2016, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The doctor, who was arrested in November 2018, signed the prescriptions while working for telemedicine firms that were acting on behalf of compounding pharmacies, according to a charging document known as an information.
