Garland police say the group operated in early morning hours, stealing vehicles and parts. Detectives are still working to connect additional cases.

GARLAND, Texas — Police said a months-long investigation has dismantled an organized vehicle theft crew responsible for at least 25 thefts and burglaries across Garland and nearby cities.

In a news release, the Garland Police Department said the group stole more than $62,000 in property and operated as a “structured operation with clearly defined roles.”

Investigators said the suspects primarily targeted older model Chevrolet, GMC and Dodge trucks from the 1990s to early 2000s, along with work vans — vehicles commonly found in North Texas neighborhoods and job sites.

The investigation began in late November 2025 after detectives identified a suspect connected to a vehicle theft, the release stated. As additional cases were reported through December and into early 2026, police said they were able to identify multiple individuals working together as part of the same crew.

Over several months, officers across multiple units — including Criminal Investigations, Neighborhood Police Officers and the Gang Unit — worked together to track the group’s activity. Police said the thefts typically occurred during early morning hours.

Five suspects were arrested in early April and face charges including engaging in organized criminal activity, as well as multiple counts of motor vehicle theft, burglary of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicle parts.

Those arrested are:
•    Mario Oder Hernandez, 31
•    Taylor Baker, 33
•    Cesar Ortega, 33
•    Jonathan Yarzabal, 29
•    Malcolm Faggett, 34

The Garland Police Department said the investigation is ongoing as detectives work to connect additional cases to the group.

Officials urge residents to take precautions, including locking vehicles, removing valuables and reporting suspicious activity promptly.
