AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin City Council has renewed its commitment to community safety by approving $532,588 in funding for the Austin Police Department's Auto Burglary and Theft Interdiction Project. The decision was made prior to Thursday's city council meeting.
"This is a continuation of a program we have been operating and involved in for decades," said District 5 Council Member Ryan Alter.
Alter emphasized the importance of providing law enforcement with the necessary resources to prevent and address auto-related crimes.
The Austin Police Department stated that the project will focus on reducing the rate of auto theft and vehicle burglaries through enforcement and outreach efforts. They also added, "The budget for the performance period will cover the personnel and fringe costs of existing positions."
