CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Police Department is warning residents about an increase in thefts involving certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles and encouraging owners to take steps to protect their cars.
According to CCPD, some Kia and Hyundai models manufactured between 2011 and 2025 are more vulnerable to theft. Officials say eligible vehicles may qualify for free security software updates designed to help prevent theft.
Vehicle owners are encouraged to contact their local dealership to determine whether their vehicle qualifies for the software update or a steering wheel lock program.
In addition, CCPD's Auto Theft Task Force is offering free steering wheel locks to eligible vehicle owners as another layer of protection against theft.
Police are also reminding drivers to follow basic safety measures, including always locking their vehicles, parking in well-lit areas and removing valuables from plain sight.
The department is asking residents to help spread awareness about the issue as thefts continue to impact communities across the region.
Drivers who own Kia or Hyundai vehicles and would like more information about available anti-theft resources can contact their local dealership or CCPD's Auto Theft Task Force.
